Baklava ~ Home-Made

BAKLAVA

Home Made Baklava Recipe ~ Coconut Filling and Various Nuts Filling

 Ingredients:

Sugar, Kewada Water or Rose Water, Sugar, Lemon Juice and Orange Water

If you can't find Orange Water you can make it yourself. Here is how I did it. Take some orange zest and pour in 1/3 cup water and let it soak over night.

Fillo Dough Sheets ~ comes in a package like this from wal-mart

Other Ingredients ~ Honey, Melted Butter (unsalted), Coconut Shredding, alomonds and Walnuts Crushed, Sugar, Nutmeg and Ground Cinnamon

After you crush the walnuts and almonds mix them together. Add in 1 spoonful sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg for flavor.

Add some sugar, ground cinnamon and nutmeg to coconut shredding as well. If coconut is sugar flavored skip the sugar part.

Take a baking cookware, butter the bottom and all sides to prevent burning. Add one sheet to the bottom. Take the melted butter and brush in the melted butter over the sheet. Add another sheet and repeat butter process 4 more times. This allows the baklava to hold the filling better.

Then add coconut shredding on one side and crushed nuts on other side ~ half and half.

Add another sheet over it and butter the top sheet. Add 3 more sheets remembering to butter the top each time. Add more filling and continue this process till you reach the top of the cooking ware.

Bake in the oven 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until the sheets are golden brown.

After it comes out of the oven pour in the syrup over the baklava and allow it to absorb it well.

To make the sugar syrup add in 3 cups of water, 4 spoons of the kewada water, 5 spoons of the orange water and 10 spoons of sugar and heat it until bubbles form around the pan.

This is what it will look like after adding the sugar syrup.

Cut the Baklava into square sizes and display and enjoy! =)

MALPUA

Ingredients: (Makes about 20 Malpuas)
1.) Flour (3 cups)
2.) Sugar (10 spoons)
3.) Baking Powder
4.) Cold Water

Directions:
First mix in the dry ingredients and slowly add the water until you get a batter cake like consistency.
Then warm up a good amount of oil in you kadhai. Take in spoonfuls of the batter and add it to the hot oil. Be very careful! :) Gently fry them until they are golden brown on both sides. If you like the crispy version better than the soft version then fry a bit longer :)

Voila ~ You have your Malpua. They are best served with a warm cup of tea =) Enjoy!
